Das NEUE Buddenbrookhaus
Das Buddenbrookhaus, Handlungsort von Thomas Manns Roman Buddenbrooks und Stammsitz der Familie Mann, gehört zu den erfolgreichsten Literaturmuseen in Deutschland. Die Besucherzahlen, die wachsende Sammlung, die größer werdende Bibliothek - sie haben das Haus an den Rand seiner Kapazitäten geführt. Es fehlt an museumspädagogischen Räumen, Bau und Ausstellung sind nicht ausreichend barrierefrei, auch ist die Ausstellung szenographisch und inhaltlich in die Jahre gekommen. Deshalb hat der Bund den Ankauf des Nachbargrundstücks finanziert, wodurch das Buddenbrookhaus die Chance erhält, seine Fläche zu verdoppeln.
Das NEUE Buddenbrookhaus will seine Möglichkeiten potenzieren: mehr Buddenbrooks, mehr Familie Mann, mehr Literatur, mehr Interaktion, mehr Bildung, mehr Forschung, mehr eigenständiges Entdecken... Zu diesem Zweck wird die Dauerausstellung völlig neu konzipiert, das heißt auch gestalterisch und museumspädagogisch auf den neuesten Stand gebracht.
Das Buddenbrookhaus wird voraussichtlich bis 2028 geschlossen sein. Es bleibt jedoch in den Jahren der Bauzeit mit einer Sonderausstellung, „Buddenbrooks im Behnhaus“, im Stadtpalais Museum Behnhaus Drägerhaus sowie mit dem Shop und Infocenter „Buddenbrooks am Markt“ in Lübeck präsent. Auch zeigt das Buddenbrookhaus wechselnde Sonderausstellungen zu Leben und Werk der Familie Mann an weiteren Orten in Lübeck.
The NEW Buddenbrookhaus
The Buddenbrookhaus, the setting for Thomas Mann’s novel “Buddenbrooks”, and ancestral home of the Mann family belongs to the most successful literature museum in Germany. The number of visitors; the growing collection; the ever-expanding library – have all pushed the museum to the brink of its capacity. The museum is lacking in teaching spaces and the building and exhibitions are not sufficiently accessible, and the exhibition is somewhat out of date both graphically and in regard to content. Therefore, the government has financed the purchase of the neighboring properties, such that the Buddenbrookhaus can double the size of its plot. The NEW Buddenbrookhaus wants to increase its potential: more “Buddenbrooks”, more of the Mann family, more literature, more interactivity, more education, more research, more independent discovery… To this end, the permanent exhibition will be entirely reconceived, and will be brought up to date in terms of museum design and education.
The Buddenbrookhaus will remain closed until the planned reopening after renovation in 2028.

Sie finden die Familie Buddenbrook bis dahin zu Gast im Museum Behnhaus, Königstraße 9-11, in Lübeck. In einer eigenen Sonderausstellung gibt hier Tony Buddenbrook so manches Geheimnis über ihre Familie und die ihrers Erfinders, Thomas Mann, preis.
Seit seiner Gründung als Heinrich-und-Thomas-Mann-Zentrum im Jahr 1993 hat sich das Buddenbrookhaus als wichtiger Standort für die nationale und internationale Familie Mann-Forschung etabliert. Diesen Rang verdankt das Buddenbrookhaus nicht zuletzt seinem Archiv und seiner umfassenden Bibliothek. Allein die Präsenzbibliothek umfasst mehr als 8.000 Bände, über 1.500 Aufsätze und mehr als 6.000 Zeitungsartikel - bei steigender Tendenz. Des Weiteren ist das Haus Sitz mehrerer literarischer Gesellschaften, der Deutschen Thomas Mann-Gesellschaft, der Heinrich Mann-Gesellschaft, der Golo Mann-Gesellschaft und der Erich Mühsam-Gesellschaft, und somit eng in die wissenschaftliche Forschungsarbeit eingebunden.
Since the establishment of the Buddenbrookhaus as the Heinrich and Thomas Mann Centre in 1993, the Buddenbrookhaus has established itself as an important facility for national and international research on the Mann family. The Buddenbrookhaus owes this rank not least to its archive and comprehensive library. The reference library alone consists of more than 8,000 volumes, over 1,500 essays and more than 6,000 articles – and is increasing. Furthermore, the Museum is the headquarters of many literary societies; the German Thomas Mann Society, the Heinrich Mann Society, the Golo Mann Society and the Erich Mühsam Society, and is thus closely involved in literary Research.
